PERSONAL HELP FINDING INFORMATION THE WEB:
- Help yourself--Learn the Principles of Web Searching with the help of this great tutorial. If you can't find it anywhere else, it may be on Gary Price's List of Lists.
- Do not overlook free chat reference at your library!
- A really fine site involving correspondence with individual specialists--in this case on a very wide variety of fields--is Allexperts. AllExperts is now partnered with another top-notch resource, About.com.
- Find an expert by subject area at AskA+ Locator: By Subject.
- Here's a fun site that is a recent discovery of your favorite DAWG: MAD Scientist Network! Last modified on "February 30, 1906," this site answers lots of science questions--not just about web resources--with a sense of humor that is most welcome.
- By far the most popular place to get your questions answered is Ask Jeeves. This search engine allows you to input questions in plain, ordinary language. The following directions are taken directly from the Ask Jeeves website:
"Enter your question, in plain English, in the text box on the Ask
Jeeves homepage (the first page you'll come to) and click on the
"ASK" button (you may also press the "enter" key on your
keyboard, depending on which browser you're using). Jeeves
will respond by presenting you with one or more questions to
which Jeeves knows the answer. (If the questions Jeeves
responds with aren't close to the question you're asking, you
may want to go to the Search Tips page for tips on phrasing
your questions.) Certain Jeeves questions contain lists from
which you can select an item by clicking on the text box that is
part of the question. To answer some questions, Jeeves will ask
you a follow-up question; you can think of this as "clarification"
needed by Jeeves to give you the best possible answer. Once
you've chosen the Jeeves question that best fits the question you
entered, click on the "GO TO" button and Jeeves will take you
to an Internet site that answers your question."
